Separately, householders who pay someone to remove waste must check that firm is a registered waste carrier. Failing to do so can result in a fixed penalty of between £150 and £600 from your council.
Common questions
Do I need a permit for a skip in Bridgwater?
You need a permit if the skip will sit on a public highway. Under section 139 of the Highways Act 1980, a skip must not be placed on a highway without the highway authority's permission. Somerset Council issues the licence, and it can only be applied for by accredited contractors, so your skip firm applies on your behalf. The council asks for at least 10 working days' notice. No permit is needed for a skip placed entirely on private land.
How do I check a skip hire firm in Bridgwater is a registered waste carrier?
You can search the Environment Agency's public register, which lists registered waste carriers, brokers and dealers. A skip company that carries other people's waste needs upper-tier registration. Four of the ten firms listed on SkipCheck for the Bridgwater area are on the Environment Agency waste carrier register, as verified on 30 September 2026. The government announced in August 2025 that the current registration system will be replaced by environmental permits or registered exemptions over three years.
Hazardous waste such as asbestos cannot go in a standard skip, and fridges and other equipment containing ozone-depleting substances also count as hazardous and need separate disposal. Plasterboard and other gypsum waste must not go to landfill alongside biodegradable waste, and whole or shredded tyres are banned from landfill, so skip firms usually ask that these are kept separate or left out of the skip entirely.
Only one of the ten firms listed for the Bridgwater area publishes a starting price on their website, and no figure was confirmed at the time of listing. Prices are not shown here. To get a reliable figure, it is worth contacting several firms directly, as costs vary depending on skip size, access, the weight of your waste and whether a highway permit is needed.
