How we check skip hire firms

Each listing shows three kinds of information, and we're clear about which is which.

1. Waste carrier registration: checked against the register

Anyone who carries other people's waste as part of their business must be a registered waste carrier, and if you pay someone to take your waste away you're expected to check. We match every firm we list against the Environment Agency's public register of waste carriers and show the date we checked.

We match in two ways. If a firm prints its registration number on its website, we look that number up. Otherwise we match strictly on the whole business name and the same postcode district, because wrongly showing a firm as registered would be worse than missing one. We never say a firm is "licensed" or "approved" by the Environment Agency: being on the register is what it is.

2. Other claims: as the firm states them

Stated on their website means the firm says it on its own website, for example that it holds an environmental permit for a waste site, or a safety accreditation. We haven't checked these yet.

3. Sizes, prices and services: from the firm's website

Skip sizes, starting prices, delivery times, whether a firm arranges permits and whether it runs its own lorries all come from its own website, and can change. Always confirm the price and what's included when you book. Contact details come from Google's business listings.

What we don't do

We don't inspect anyone's work, and a listing is not a recommendation. We don't use logos of the Environment Agency or any scheme. If something is wrong, tell us and we'll fix it.
