Skip permits and skip hire in the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council area
The rules for putting a skip on the road here, and where to find the 111 skip hire firms we list nearby (17 on the Environment Agency waste carrier register).
Skip permits
A skip on the road needs permission from the highway authority, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. Skip companies apply, and must first register as an approved skip contractor with £10 million public liability insurance and a waste carrier's licence.
You don't need a licence for a skip on a driveway, on private land, or in a garden.
Fee: £39 per permit, lasting up to 7 or 14 days depending on the type of street (from the council's 2026/27 skip code of practice). A skip found on the road without a permit is charged a £110 retrospective fee.
Permit requests by email (skips@barnsley.gov.uk) must arrive before 12pm the day before the skip is placed; by any other method, 3 working days' notice is needed. Skips must be lit from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.
