Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council charges £28 per skip permit from 1 April 2026, covering a maximum of two weeks, and only a company can apply, not a resident, so your skip firm applies on your behalf. The start date must be at least three working days after the application, except in an emergency, and a new permit is needed after two weeks. Householders must also check that whoever takes their waste is a registered carrier, or risk a council fixed penalty of £150 to £600 for failing in this duty of care.

Hazardous waste such as asbestos needs specialist disposal, and equipment with ozone-depleting substances, like fridges, also counts as hazardous, so it shouldn't go in an ordinary skip. Plasterboard and other gypsum waste can't go to landfill mixed with biodegradable waste, and whole or shredded tyres are banned from landfill too, so skip firms usually ask for these to be kept separate or left out altogether. Always check with your chosen firm, since individual firms may also have their own extra restrictions on what they'll accept in a skip.
